First of all, let me get it straight: I do not say you should spend every single moment together. Everyone needs their space now and then. With today's busy lifestyles, there are many demands for a person's time. You go to work, have family responsibilities and community involvement. And when you finally get home, maybe you still want to reserve some time for yourself.
But it doesn’t mean your marriage and your partner come last. I appreciate you want to keep your old hobby or a certain level of previous social contacts, but don’t expect your husband or wife to sit at home and wait until you finally decide to generously spare some time to spend with them. Sometimes people take the marriage for granted and instead focus on their careers, a house, or hobbies. Don’t be one of them!
Enjoy Your Marriage, And Protect These Precious MomentsYou must decide that you are going to spend some time together! In fact, you must commit to spending that time together -- no matter what. You want your marriage to be a happy one, right? Well, your marriage will not remain passionate and neither you will stay connected with your spouse if you don’t decide and find the time to be together.
Don’t expect it to be easy. Dr. William J. Doherty states that "many of us, especially when we are raising children and have busy jobs, live our marriages with a chronic sense of deficit about the time we spend together as a couple," and that "competitors for our daily time are far more assertive than we are about our marriage".
And because of that one of the vital things you must do after deciding to spend time together is committing to protecting that time from all invaders.
Invaders? What invaders? Well, let’s see: phone calls, work (including work at home), visitors of any kind and last but not least, your own children.
