Healthier Marriage Guide: Day-to-Day Money ManagementAs for a day-to-day money management, it's essential to agree on a system that works for both partners. It could be a good idea if you set a certain amount of money (or certain percentage of your total income) that can and will be spent on committed expenses (expenses you just can’t avoid, like food, clothing, bills etc.), and the rest you should put aside. That remaining money you can divide into several chunks: retirement savings, long-term savings, short-term savings and so on. And finally let’s talk about money responsibility and control. If you both feel comfortable with the imbalance in responsibilities and it doesn't cause you to fight, I would say it’s OK when one person controls the money flow. But if you don’t like being pushed aside, again try to establish a system that will work for both of you.
Communication Between Partners: Dialog And Compromise, That's The KeyBy the way, if you are not the partner that controls the family budget, you should still get informed at least with basic financial terms. After all, there are many completely unpredictable events that can appear and suddenly you’ll have to manage the family's finances and investments. At the very least you should know where all the files are in case of an emergency. Whatever the reason, you should keep in mind that the key for settling any fight is dialog and compromise. Find a solution that suits you both. You can't always get your way, but I’m sure you can get agreement with critical points you usually fight about.
