Marriage Counseling Tip: Money Is Important, But...As for the money, I guess it’s pretty easy to explain: we fight if there’s not enough of money, or if one partner feels the other one is spending too much. Oh yes, there is also a third reason: who controls a family budget.
A money fight could start over whether it was you or your spouse who overdrew the checking account. You can argue whether it’s better to buy a new car (as he says!) or redo the basement (that’s her idea). The solution might be to look at the big picture: day-to-day money tensions can be diffused by agreeing on long-term goals. If one partner is not that great at saving, it's much easier for both of them to come to terms with certain spending restrictions if they are able to have the discussions in the context of that bigger goal.
